In the hustle and bustle of every day, we can easily lose sight of self-care and taking time to reflect. Personally, between my work, home life, gym schedule, and taking care of two pups, each day seems to be filled with unrelenting tasks and to-dos. Finding time for reflection or meditation can seem impossible especially when I’m constantly thinking about what’s next on the list. That’s why I’ve taken the opportunity to make tea brewing time the perfect setting for daily reflection.
Making the Most Out of Your Tea Brewing Time
While most drink their tea to relax, sometimes I just don’t have the time to spare. Some days it is easier to make the tea brewing time my designated time for reflection. I like to watch our electric kettle as I clear my mind and focus on my breathing. Our kettle takes about three minutes to fully boil, giving me the perfect alloted amount of time for self-reflection and moments of gratitude. I always watch for the little bubbles to begin to form at the bottom of the kettle while I clear my mind and only think about my breathing. As the bubbles get larger, I begin to focus on self-awareness: How am I feeling? Is there anything I can do later today for self-care? Are there any toxic thoughts that I’m having that need to be addressed? As the third minute approaches and the water slowly starts to boil, I make sure to end on notes of positivity by thinking about all that I’m grateful for. It can be something as little as the kind smiles shared with a neighbor on my morning dog walk– finding at least a few things to be thankful for can really resonate as a powerful motivator for all the remaining tasks of the day.
The Benefits of Self-Reflection Time
There are great benefits for taking the time to self-reflect, clear your mind, and find moments of gratitude. Self-reflection strengthens emotional intelligence by giving you the ability to better understand your emotions, strengths, vulnerabilities, weaknesses, drives, goals, and our impact on others. This helps build self-regulation which strengthens your ability to control or redirect disruptive emotions and impulses. Taking the time to self-reflect makes your core values clearer, which in turn, strengthens your integrity and leads you to make better decisions for you. The more you reflect on your strengths, the more confidence you build as well.
Taking moments to clear your mind can help alleviate stress and anxiety. It is really easy to have an over-active mind with all the different pieces of information we gain through various outlets. Focusing on your breathing and letting your mind wander each day can help improve your focus and reduce age-related memory loss. Finding moments of gratitude is a great way to emphasize the positive aspects of your life, which also helps with stress and anxiety.
